Photofacial is one of the newer forms of facial rejuvenation. Unlike lasers, which use intense, focused light, IPL is intense broadband light. Although IPL delivers energy to both the superficial (epidermis) and deep (dermis) layers of the skin, the epidermis is spared from damage. Thus, there is virtually no recovery time. Photo Facial utilizes a series of pulsed light treatments to dramatically erase freckles, age spots, spider veins, sun damage, redness and flushing (rosacea), and irregular pigmentation. The light penetrates through the skin and is absorbed by pigmentation. The heat causes damage to the vessel or lesion, and the body begins its natural healing process. The lesion will darken before it flakes off or the body absorbs it. In the studies that have been performed so far, IPL can smooth the skin, remove age spots, freckles, melasma, and even visible blood vessels.
